Rainbows Over Our Heads

“The universe is full of magical things

patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.”

-Eden Phillpotts, A Shadow Passes

I discovered this quote in my morning reading and promptly jotted it in my journal. A few minutes later, I took our dog, Bailey, outside for her morning walk. It was lightly sprinkling, so I altered my typical path to shorten our outing. Turning a corner, I was surprised by a huge rainbow glistening ahead at the end of the street. I snapped a quick photo as I stood in delight and gratitude.

Several blocks away, a woman was walking her dog towards me with her back to the rainbow (If you look carefully at the photo below, you can see her). Oh no, she’s going to miss that rainbow right over her head!

Using wild arm motions, pointing my finger and sweeping my arm back and forth, I attempted to alert her to the rainbow behind her. She must’ve thought the lady approaching her was crazy!  (Maybe I am!) Then I resorted to shouting, “Look behind you!” “Turn around!” Arm motions continued.

Finally, she turned around and gasped in awe. When we got close enough to talk without shouting, she exclaimed, “Wow! It’s going to be a good day! Thank you for telling me about that rainbow!”

We resumed our walks with our pets, in opposite directions. The rainbow remained.

I’ve since been pondering: How many beautiful, magical things do I miss because I’m distracted, got my back to them, or am simply oblivious?  Perhaps rainbows are always over our heads.

Let us give thanks for the magical things in the universe, and may our wits grow sharper to be able to see and appreciate them!

Sending love,

Mabeth
